Week 11 (Analytic and Holistic marking)

It is interesting to learn about analytic and holistic marking scheme as both of these two marking scheme have its own strength and weaknesses.
Analytic provide separate assessment for each of a number of aspect of performance. This marking scheme is really helpful for novice or inexperience teachers as it give clear information about how we should mark students work.

Holistic marking scheme on the other hand helps novice teacher to give feedback to their students. Holistic marking scheme assume that all aspect of writing should be considered when marking students work. In other words, students writing are overall assessed by teacher. Holistic provides detail description of how teacher should mark students work.

Week 2 (Fundamentals of testing & assessment)
This topic helps me to understand better about what we should consider when designing a test to test or assess student’s performances.  Good language test should have criteria such as validity, reliability, practicability and backwash/washback.
This is what I understand about these 4 criteria. A test said to have validity when it measure what it is supposed to measure. In other words, validity deals with appropriateness of the content. There are several types of validity which are content validity, concurrent validity, predictive validity, construct validity and face validity.
Reliability is the consistency of test. A test should provide a clear instruction to avoid misinterpretation of what they asked to do for the test. Test said to be reliable when students get the same score even when they take same test on different day.
Practicability looks at how the test administer. When designing a test, we should think about logistic. A test should be easy to be administered without costing much money and time. A test should be fast, cheap and good but it is hard to achieve these criteria.

Week 1
What do you understand about Measurement, Evaluation, Assessment and Testing (MEAT)?
Measurement : Measurement deals with value. So in context of teaching and learning, it deals with student’s results which are “fail” and “pass”.
Evaluation     : Evaluation is used to evaluate and judge the effectiveness of materials that   used in classroom.
Assessment   : Assessment is an ongoing process that teacher do in classroom. It is    different from testing as teacher monitor student’s performances such as their skills and proficiency. For me, I think that assessment is a good process of learning as teacher will provide feedback regularly. From continuous feedback, students will be able to know their mistake.
Testing         : Testing is a formal way to check student performance after all that they done in classroom. Teacher usually used numbers to state student performance/ result of the test.

What is significant for you based on the video and article?
Both of this video and article talk about different ways to grade student’s knowledge and performances in classroom. Normally teacher will use traditional assessment to assess students’ performance which is year end examination. From this video, I learned that we should not completely assess students’ ability and knowledge based on result of the examination.  It is interesting how teacher used project work to assess their students performance as it give students more opportunities to show what they have. Project work will help students’ to improve their communicative skills and leadership as they need to work in group to accomplish their task given. Some students might not do well in the year end test and some might do well in the assignment given to them. Other than that, I learned that continuous feedback is also necessary in learning and teaching process. Continuous feedback from teacher will help students to know their mistake and it will help them to make the same mistake again. In other words, feedback will help students’ to improve themselves.
